The Dong Xuan market is built in the canton of the same name on land flooded by the Tô Lich River and the Red River. After the inauguration of the Long Bien Bridge in 1902, its commercial activities experienced vigorous growth thanks to its geographical position at the crossroads of land, river and railway routes. Covering an area of 20,000 m², the market was covered by a tin roof.
At the start of the First War of National Resistance, the Dong Xuan market was the scene of many fierce battles against legionnaires. Several Vietminh fighters died there. Memorable event: on December 18, 1946, a barricade was set up there to stem an attack by French soldiers against the headquarters of the Vietnamese self-defense forces on neighboring Hàng Lược Street. In 2005, a relief entitled Hanoi-winter 1946 was erected next to the Dong Xuân market in memory of the soldiers who died during the fighting to defend the capital at the end of 1946 and beginning of 1947.

After several decades, Dong Xuan still remains the largest market in the capital. Its rich cultural and historical values have ended up making it one of the favorite destinations for visitors. Since 2003, the market has opened at night to serve tourists. They can come to this night market to shop and watch at the same time the performances of hát xẩm (blind people's songs), chèo (popular theater) and quan ho (alternating songs)...
For their contributions to the preservation of traditional cultural values, these performances are well appreciated by the Vietnam Music Development Center. According to forecasts, the Dong Xuan night market will be expanded for the Thang Long-Hanoi Millennium.

The market is located in the historic district, close to famous streets selling souvenirs and clothes, such as Hàng Ngang, Hàng Đào, Hàng Bông, Hàng Gai... and close to the historic site of Ngọc Sơn temple, this which makes a visit to the city center easier.

Đồng Xuân Market is open every day of the week from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. As for the food court in Dong Xuan Market Alley, it stays open until the early morning of the next day. More particularly than other markets, during weekends (Friday to Sunday), Đồng Xuân market remains open until 10:30 p.m. to meet the shopping and strolling needs of tourists.
Along this small alley - just wide enough to accommodate a row of tables and chairs, with passers-by brushing past each other, a "culinary maze" unfolds with a variety of attractively presented mouth-watering dishes such as spring rolls, shrimp cakes, snail vermicelli, minced pork skewers on bamboo skewers, desserts of different kinds...
