Located at Phnom Sruoch district in the province of Kampong Speu, Kirirom National Park is established on a seven hundred meters hill covering an area of over thirty five thousand hectares in the Elephant Mountains. The name 'Kirirom' meaning Mountain of Joy was given to it by the King of Cambodia. Kirirom National Park, a high altitude plateau, is known for its unique high elevation pine forest, which forms the headwaters for numerous streams feeding Kampong Speu Town.

Nestled in the Phnom Sruoch district of Kampong Speu province, Kirirom National Park sits atop a 700-meter hill, spanning over 35,000 hectares in the Elephant Mountains. The name ‘Kirirom,’ meaning Mountain of Joy, was bestowed by the King of Cambodia. This high-altitude plateau is renowned for its unique pine forest, which serves as the source for numerous streams that flow into Kampong Speu Town. Kirirom National Park is part of the ‘Southwest Cluster Protected Areas,’ which also includes Phnom Bokor, Preah Sihanouk, and Kep National Parks. For those seeking travel tips in Cambodia, this park is a must-visit destination.

This park is also home to many endangered species such as the Pleated gibbon, sun bear, and tiger. Visitors can enjoy a traditional ox-cart ride or trek along the walking trails among the pine trees. Located 120 kilometers west of Phnom Penh, visitors can hire taxis or travel along National Road No. 4 to reach this natural resort. Officially named Preah Suramarith Kossmak, Kirirom National Park spans about 80,000 acres of forested land on a rare plateau in southwestern Cambodia. At an elevation of about 2,200 feet, it supports a large pine forest distinct from the country’s typical tropical jungle. Our last stop in the park was a newly renovated visitor’s center, which, though small, was quite impressive. For more insights, refer to a comprehensive Cambodia travel guide.

The visitor’s center boasts some truly attractive displays, though the space is a bit cramped for the number of exhibits. Nonetheless, it was refreshing to see such high standards applied. A particularly rewarding experience was meeting the woman in the picture, the center’s manager, who clearly takes great pride in her country, her park, and her role in representing it to the public. Adjacent to the visitor’s center are the ruins of a large old mansion. The picture shows a tall, multi-part chimney on a foundation surrounded by a wooden deck that is dangerously falling apart. This house was once a hot-season estate of Cambodia’s King Sihanouk but was destroyed by the Khmer Rouge, who were not finally driven out of this area until 1992. For those interested in lifestyle, this park offers a unique glimpse into Cambodia’s rich history and natural beauty.
